“The Great Gatsby” which is set to release on Christmas day, has the internet buzzing, after it released a crafty trailer for fans.

The film which boasts an impressive cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Tobey Maguire, and highly respected Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, has already caught the attention of many.

“The Great Gatsby” follows Nick Caraway (Tobey Maguire) a man from the Midwest who eventually lands in New York City around 1922. A time where morals have no value, and the rich are super rich. Nick is an inspiring man, who eventually runs into Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) a millionaire who lives lavishly. Nick is quickly fascinated by the lifestyle Jay Gatsby leads, and is immediately engulfed by his circle. The journey includes what is touted as “obsession, and tragedy.” This film encompasses classic literature, and modernizes it for the 21st century.

Leonardo DiCaprio continues to work on big projects, this time with Director Baz Luhrmann. DiCaprio, who most recently has been tied to the hip of legendary Director Martin Scorsese, has reached massive success through prolific roles. If you haven’t seen The Aviator in which Leo plays the role of aviation enthusiast Howard Hughes, you must. It would be a nice preview on what you can expect from DiCaprio in “The Great Gatsby.”

“The Great Gatsby” is also bound to have success overseas, specifically in India. The most respected Bollywood (the alternative to Hollywood) actor in India is Amitabh Bachchan, who will be playing Meyer Wolfsheim in the film. The 69 year old veteran has not had a significant role in Hollywood before, making this a prolific opening in his crossover career.

Lookout for “The Great Gatsby” on Christmas day, you can check out the trailer below and let your excitement run wild!

It’s summertime, and that means one thing and thing only. It’s time to hit the theaters! Let’s face it, what better way to wile away a few hours, than being in an air conditioned movie theater, watching a good quality story on screen.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is that quality film you are looking for. The story revolves around this old yet majestic hotel that has lost its charm over time. While the hotel is portrayed as a palace in the brochure given to a group of British retirees , the actual structure would fail building tests here in the states, and most likely be deemed unsafe property. But structural codes, and cordial appearances don’t mean much in the hustle and bustle of a country with a population boasting 1,205,073,612 individuals. Instead The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is an affordable, and exciting venture that catches the interest of a quirky group, who are facing various problems as retirement approaches.

The films strongest character is India itself. Outside the stereotype of crowded streets, poverty filled slums, and a general sense of chaos, Director John Madden, and writer Ol Parker have captured the cultural essence of India. The positives outweigh the negatives, and while the Indian cast itself is not the prominent group in the movie, they are cast based on cultural infusion.

The films English cast is superb, and while all have different personalities, majority start to see the light through the eyes of India’s splendid culture, and environment.

Judi Dench plays Evelyn Greenslade, a smart and ambitious woman who is going through a very difficult time in her life. Evelyn feels a sense of loneliness, and lack of purpose in life, yet has so much to offer the world. She is an objective woman, and has all intentions of helping the people around her. As the story progresses, Evelyn explains how broke she really is. So broke, that the people she shows her outpouring support to, realize she’s the one that’s needed the support all along. Dench is in the business of acting, and she does it with great ease in this film.

The two time Oscar nominee Tom Wilkinson plays Graham Dashwood. Graham is no stranger to India. He claims that his best years actually took place during his time in India, before he moved to England with his parents. Graham being the veteran of the group goes on secret trips while the rest struggle to adapt in this foreign country. Graham is by far the most affectionate character. He’s sound, and stable. He has a goal to accomplish, but nobody in the group can figure out what that goal is. Graham leads the audience to curiosity, until finally the truth is revealed.

Bil Nighy plays Douglas Ainslie, a kind and faithful husband who hides his true feelings. Douglas and his wife have been married for nearly 40 years, and while things seem normal, the couple has clearly drifted apart, but are doing everything they can to keep the building from crumbling. Douglas ventures out to temples, and other cultural monuments in India, and genuinely loves every single second of his adventure. His wife on the other end hates the hotel with a passion, and isn’t interested in venturing out like the rest of the group. While Douglas is having the time of his life, he is also drifting farther away from his longtime wife.

A picture speaks a thousand words. Well Penolope Wilton plays Jean Ainslie Douglas’ nuisance of a wife. A very insecure lady who just wants things her way. Jean is by far the “chosen one” in the film as far as accepting her new surroundings. Not everyone can be happy right? Well Jean is the definition of unhappy. She hates India from the start, and has no intention of giving India a chance. While the rest of the clan explores, she sulks. While her husband does everything in his power to make her happy, she puts a lull on his efforts. Jean stays consistent the entire film, and the frustration finally kicks in. At the end of the day, Jean Ainslie lets the inevitable course of truth, take control.

The best back story in the film is played by Maggie Smith. Maggie plays Muriel Donnelly a grumpy “racist” who is in need of hip surgery. The predicament she finds herself in is one of financial significance. Muriel refuses to trust a doctor outside of her race, and she’s not shy to proclaim that. She’s so outlandishly reserved, that no one really wants to help her. Muriel realizes it’s much cheaper, and faster to have a hip surgery in India, that she is forced to join the rest of the crew on this adventure. Keep in mind culture is not her strong suite…… and well India is filled with it. Muriel struggles to adapt, but her story is the most prolific, and commanding when it’s all said and done. Maggie Smith is a two time Oscar winner, and she infuses so much comedy into this heartfelt film. It’s a great role, and very memorable as the self proclaimed “scene stealer.”

Ronald Pickup plays Norman Cousins, the perverted old man. I literally could stop right here with my description on this character but Norman is a lot of fun on screen. He infuses the “age is just a number,” theory throughout the film. His mission in this movie is to have just one amazing one night stand. Does he get what he wants? It’s a comical portrayal, and very light-hearted. Norman is the one man in the group that has no reservations about the situation he’s been put into.

Celia Imrie plays Madge Hardcastle, the character that can easily be forgotten, because the emphasis is sparse. Madge is a single woman who is seeking a rich Indian man who can support her. Essentially a “gold-digger” roaming the rich clubs in India. Comical at times, but a fairly simplistic character who trudges along with the rest. While she doesn’t believe in much, she is pleasantly surprised at how honesty can lead to a successful relationship, not just money.

Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame, plays the quirky Sonny Kapoor. Sonny runs The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep it alive. Sonny’s dad who founded the hotel passed away leaving equal portions of the property to his three sons. Sonny is the only son that sees the hotel as a prized possession, while the other two have no interest in maintaining this run down structure. Sonny’s mom also sees no potential, and warns Sonny about how this hotel was wrong from the start, and that his dad was a fool to keep it alive. The great part about Sonny’s character is his ambition and passion to keep this hotel alive. The film also introduces the generational gap between son and mother. While arranged marriages still exist in India, the modernization of them is still a rocky road between parent and child. Dev does a good job keeping his optimism up and somehow transforms this gimmick in a brochure, into a magical location that revives a group’s lives in different ways.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is in select theaters now, but will be seeing a wide release soon. If you are looking for a feel good story, with beautiful shots of India, this movie is sure to put a smile on your face. The story is catered to the older demographic, but the message is universal.

My 1-10 scale= 8

LeBron James became the eighth player in NBA history to win MVP honors for the third time in his career. For James it’s an impressive accomplishment, as he has turned into a villain for so many fans across the league.

While the LeBron haters continue to hold on to the “ring-less” jokes, James shows no signs of slowing down in his career. At 27 years of age LeBron is only now hitting his prime, and is doing it in scary fashion. While many anti LeBron fans were hoping for a Durant MVP celebration, they all forget to look at how well LeBron has played on both ends of the court. The mixture of size, speed, strength, and IQ has the three time MVP winner in his own league. A league that he has yet to seize on the biggest stage, but is bound to do sooner or later.

While thee MVP’s are impressive, and puts LeBron in an illustrious group, he hasn’t lost sight of the main goal at hand.

“We have a bigger goal. I want that championship. That’s all that matters to me,” James said.

When a player of LeBron’s caliber steps onto the court, objective NBA fans know what they are seeing. They know though this professional athlete has not won on the biggest stage in his sport, he is still the best overall NBA player by miles. The ring is necessary to embrace the career, in fact multiple rings are necessary, but not having one doesn’t negate the truth;  since day one, LeBron James has lived up to the hype. He’s steered clear of trouble, and has promoted positivity within the community.

The Decision and the ring debate have lost a large amount of relevance. It’s stale… it’s like that massive box of cereal you bought at Sam’s Club. Half of the box is done (a normal portion) but the other half is now boring to your taste buds. What do you do? Do you keep that box as a hoarder, or do you eventually move on and toss it in the trash? Guilty? “Oh but it expired!” Suddenly that pulls you off the hook, and you have a valid excuse to toss it.

Well that’s my valid excuse, and after LeBron wins a ring this year it really goes in the trash for good. Sorry… LeBron brings out the cockiness in me.

According to @tomhaberstroh who does an amazing job covering the Miami Heat, LeBron averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.9 steals, on 53% shooting. To put that in perspective, no one else has matched that stat line, with the exception of Michael Jordan, who did it only once in his career. Tom further states that Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone each won three MVPs before winning a championship, hinting if the progressive coincidence continues, LeBron is on deck for his own ring in the near future.

LeBron gets quite the label from “ratings hungry” personality Skip Bayless. Skip values his entertainment more than his objectiveness, and consistently throws LeBron under the bus because that’s what he’s been told to do. LeBron’s numbers do the talking in the playoffs. He has led his team in points, rebounds, and assists twenty times in his playoff career… that my friends is the most in NBA history.

At this pace LeBron could win a few more MVP’s before his career is done. But winning those trophies won’t mean much.

“I’d give all three (MVPs) back if I could win a championship,” James said.

If you hate LeBron I feel bad for you. I feel like as an NBA fan you’re missing out on greatness taking place. All the outside distractions are a just a mere blemish. As a fan what’s more important than the production on the court? The hairline is funny, the glasses are nerdy, and “The Decision” was a blast of ego mixed with bad execution by team LeBron, and ESPN executives.

What I will tell LeBron haters is this…. Hate him or love him, LeBron James deserved that MVP trophy this year. You don’t like him personally that’s your opinion, but the numbers don’t lie, and when it’s that impressive, it must be awarded.

I would love to see LeBron complete the year with a championship ring on his finger. The Miami Heat control their own destiny, and for the first time I hope to see LeBron grab it with a vengeance.

The Houston Rockets find themselves in a familiar situation, one that screams that dreaded word, “mediocre.”

The Rockets for the third consecutive year have missed the playoffs, and continue to find ways to make it interesting, while essentially formulating the same conclusion. The Rockets are 22nd in overall attendance, and fans clearly can’t be fooled. While the Rockets continue to rack up big wins against top tier teams, the result is temporary happiness.

The Rockets as of now, are selling the idea that making the playoffs is the goal. It has been three years, and the goal has failed. It’s not because the front office is “dumb” (I’m looking at you Bobcats FO,) or because the owner doesn’t have the passion to win, but simply because the approach is extremely difficult.

In basketball you have a few ways to quickly improve. The Rockets have chosen free agency, and trades as the primary form of transformation. The trade aspect nearly worked out, but in “veto” fashion the Rockets crashed, and burned. Can you blame Daryl Morey(GM) and his staff for that?

It’s now a mere excuse to look back and say “the NBA screwed us over!” It happened, and the Rockets had to accept it. Trades have never been “splash” worthy through this three year slump. The Rockets front office have acquired quality role players, and then shipped them out for the next bunch. The results have matched the strategy. With no anchor in place, the Rockets fight for everything they want, and just fall short each year.

You can blame the referees, you can blame David Stern, but at the end of the day that doesn’t change the situation.

You have to look at this logically. In one aspect having superstars makes you an automatic contender. You face high expectations. The Miami Heat are a prime example, and granted they are a special circumstance to the point, they know it’s championship or bust. On the flip side, entering a regular season knowing you won’t be very good, gives the average fan a realistic outlook.

When it comes to the Rockets, it’s the middle of the pack. It’s that spot that no one really wants to be in, but it beats watching a team completely tank an entire regular season away. The really bad team at least receives an incentive, a very high draft pick. The middle of the pack team gets a middle of the pack draft pick. The Rockets have found themselves in that situation far too many times, and while they have drafted some good players with the pick, they still miss out on that anchor.

I personally hate the word “tank.” As a die hard Rockets fan, I don’t think I could stand watching an entire season of nothing. The Bobcats have won seven games this season. I loathe at the thought of being a Bobcats fan in Charlotte, but the fact remains that the Bobcats will land an anchor in the draft, that can significantly improve that teams future. It’s bittersweet…. you play terribly and get the gift everyone wants, or you play average and get the gift that no one really wants. You know what I mean right? Christmas time rolls around as a child, and instead of a cool new toy, you get that ugly Christmas sweater! Is it worth seeing the Rockets beat the Thunder, Lakers, and Bulls for the 14th pick all over again? At the time we are insanely ecstatic, but when that ugly conclusion gets closer, it’s not really that significant. Those three teams will be playing for a championship, while the Rockets sit and watch.

I personally believe in the Rockets front office, but the approach being taken is such a difficult one. Daryl Morey continues to stay confident with this path, and exuded that confidence to the Houston Chronicle.

“We’re all competitive, myself and the coaching staff. It’s nothing I need to dictate. A couple games go our way, and we’re where we need to be. We went in with eyes open knowing this wasn’t a championship-competitive team. We have to continue to get better players in here and have the financial flexibility to add players and have the draft picks to keep improving the team and hopefully get a break in the trade market.”

As far as tanking goes, Morey simply refused.

“That approach is not one we want to take or think we should,” Morey said. “I think this year for that to make any sense we would have to win less than 22 games.”

I think that’s a fairly logical answer, and the right one. In order for the Rockets to tank, they would actually have to work for it. The way the roster stands, this team will continue to be “the outside looking in,” clan. Again a valiant and respectable effort, but a mediocre one when seen repetitively.

The silver lining in all this is the cap space the Rockets have. The not so promising end to that is the weak free agency class. According to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets have somewhere between 12-19 million to spend, depending on trades and free agents they are willing to bring back. As of now, signs show Morey bringing back Courtney Lee (restricted) and making a competitive bid for Goran Dragic.

The end game in all this is still up in the air. Who will the Rockets sign? Who will they trade for? Will Deron Williams have any interest in the Rockets? Will Dwight Howard rental scenarios pop back up? How will draft night play out? Is Kevin Martin a lost cause?

One thing’s for sure, the Rockets as always will be involved in all superstar scenarios, and while Morey has no problem being active, it’s the execution that just falls short.

It should be an interesting draft, and off-season. The Rockets continue to believe that they can make this team into a contender, and when it happens, it will happen fast. Let’s hope that’s the case, and this team can move forward, in the quest for a championship.

“4-0 that’s the way it goes.”

The Houston Rockets have now officially completed an early April road trip with a 4-0 record.

The Rockets who find themselves fighting for position in the competitive Western Conference, have peaked at the right time. With only nine games remaining this season, the Rockets have put together a fantastic playoff push for Red Nation viewers.

The road trip has defined what most Rockets fans already knew; the Rockets deserve to be in the playoffs. The team continues to fight hard every single night, and have proven they can beat teams who are considered to be top tier foes.

What Rockets fans have seen on this road trip has been undoubtedly special. The team work, the chemistry, and the heart to win, has led this Rockets team to success. The players are clearly on the same page, the coaching staff couldn’t be happier, and via tweets from @johnhollinger Daryl Morey can’t stay in his seat! (Ya I was jumping around as well Mr. Morey.)

The thing about this Rockets team is they give you something to appreciate. It’s not the superstar+role players mold. It’s a cohesive team effort, where each player accepts a certain amount of responsibility. The great thing about it is, Rockets first year head coach Kevin McHale seems to embrace the concept. While at times its been a rocky road, the chemistry on this team in undeniably impressive. It seems like players appreciate the opportunity, and return the favor in strides. It’s a unique twist, on the norm in the NBA. As much as having a superstar is essential, you have to appreciate what the Rockets are doing right now as a group.

The Rockets opened up the road trip against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls are currently 22-6 at home, ya they are pretty good. That didn’t stop this pesky bunch from stealing a victory at the United Center. The Rockets ran into a major skid in the second quarter that saw the Bulls outscore the Rockets 29-14. The Rockets wasted no time in flipping the script in the 3rd, by having a 31-19 quarter, and eventually winning the game 99-93 in front of 21,000 Bulls fans. Luis Scola had a fantastic night, scoring 18 points, and pulling down 12 rebounds. Marcus “The Camby Man Can” pulled down 11 rebounds with the one working hand he currently has.

But of course the common theme on this road trip was Goran Dragic. Dragic who was recently honored with the well deserved Western Conference Player of the Week award, had 21 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals in that epic Bulls victory.

The next stop was in LA, against the dreaded Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers also boast an impressive 23-6 record at home. Once again this didn’t intimidate the Rockets. Just as the Bulls game played out, the Rockets were miserably outscored in the second 35-21, and flipped the script yet again in the third, outscoring the Lakers 34-22. A stellar performance once again from “Gogi” who scored 26 points, and dished out 11 assists, led the Rockets to a 112-107 win in La La Land. Another consistent I would like to point out is Marcus Camby, who once again pulled down 11 huge rebounds. The two headed monster of Camby, and Samuel Dalembert combined for 24 points, and 17 rebounds. The Rockets threw surprise rookie sensation Chandler Parsons, and Courtney Lee at Kobe Bryant all night, making his task a difficult one. The best part of the night was when the cameras panned over at the Rockets bench, as Andrew Bynum was ejected from the game. Priceless faces, and a priceless win.

The Rockets didn’t have to travel far for their next opponent. The Sacramento Kings, who on paper had no business beating the Rockets, lived up to the assumption. The Rockets hit a bumpy stretch in the third, but wasted no time getting back on track. This time Courtney Lee took matters into his own hands, and ended the game with 25 points, and 4 steals. Goran Dragic who was in a giving mood, dished out 9 assists along with 15 points. Patrick Patterson joined the fun by pulling down 10 rebounds, and scoring 10 points for a solid double double, while Chase Budinger hit three timely three pointers. Six Rockets players were in double figures, leading to an easy 104-87 win. This was also extra special for Rockets fans, as Kyle Lowry who had been out with a scary bacterial infection made his way back. Lowry played 18 minutes, and dished out a productive 7 assists. After the game he told Matt Bullard, “I have a lot left in the tank.”

3-0 was nice, but the Rockets wanted to add the cherry on top. So why not finish the road trip with a win, at a place the Rockets really enjoyed winning at? The Portland Trail Blazers who are clearly rebuilding, once again had no business beating the Rockets. While they gave a valiant effort, the Rockets took care of business with a 94-89 win. Wondering who had a good game? Do you even have to ask? Goran “Gogi” Dragic ended the night with 22pts, 7 assists, and 2 steals, proving why he deserved Western Conference Player of the Week honors. Oh by the way, guess who pulled down 11 rebounds again? “The Camby Man Can,” can’t you just hear Red Nation humming that? Courtney Lee, and Chase Budinger were battling a flu bug, but they combined for 27 points, and some very timely three point baskets. As Lowry promised, he did have a lot left in the tank. In 23 minutes of play, Lowry went 5-6 from the court, scoring 13 points, along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, a very Lowry like stat line.

Just to put Goran Dragic’s spectacular numbers in perspective, here’s how it all adds up. During this four game road trip, Dragic scored 84 points, had 32 assists, made 8 three pointers, and ended it all with a measly 9 turnovers. I don’t know how to put Goran Dragic’s play into words. Stellar? Fantastic? Gogiriffic? Call it what you please, but appreciate it in all its glory.

After the game against the Blazers, Dragic told Matt Bullard, “I was working all my life to get this opportunity, I’m really happy right now, and I’m gonna fight to the end!”

It won’t be easy keeping Dragic in a Rockets uniform. He is a unrestricted free agent next year, meaning the dollar bills are headed his way. The Rockets have made it no secret they will do what it takes to retain him, but as we have seen in the past, it’s never as easy as it sounds. Until that time comes, Rockets fans have a lot to look forward too.

The Rockets have gone above and beyond during this road trip, and for that I thank them. Like many of you, I am a die hard Rockets fan, and the playoff push they have put together has been some of the best basketball I have seen in a long time. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and show no signs of slowing down.

Red Nation you have a team that’s playing hard, and playing with pride, keep supporting these guys all the way through!

The Houston Rockets want you to vote, as they have asked all season! This time it’s for the all-decade team of the 2000′s and the nominees are….

Rafer Alston

Shane Battier

Aaron Brooks

Steve Francis

Chuck Hayes

Tracy McGrady

Yao Ming

Cuttino Mobley

Dikembe Mutombo

Luis Scola

All nominees are highly worthy of being on the list, and have given Rockets fans countless memories over the past few years. The Rockets have done a great job honoring players of the past this season, and if you do get a chance to visit the Toyota Center, make sure and walk the concourse. The feeling is nostalgic, and massive murals have been created, as each decade has been voted upon. A really fantastic idea by the Rockets this season as they celebrate 45 years of Rockets basketball.

It’s always a challenge to vote because every player on each list has given us a memory, and while some are more obvious than others, it’s still a challenge. After looking at the choices I am confident I have my five players picked, and I will explain why.

The first selection was simple for me. He stands tall, and is filled with international pride. Yao Ming who landed in Houston with immense pressure on his shoulders, transcended the way the Rockets were viewed across the world. Yao not only had to adapt to the way basketball was played in the United States, but also had to adapt to the culture. A colossal up-taking, that clearly was well worth the time and effort. As a city we got to know how humble, and smart Yao Ming was. It was a media blitz, and I don’t think Yao ever let that get the best of him. Yao is an eight time NBA All Star, and though injuries plagued his short NBA career, the Rockets drafted a basketball player who brought international appeal. Many are quick to forget that behind all the business advantages of having an international icon, Yao was a very skilled and talented basketball player, at a position that is virtually extinct in the NBA. After all, here in Houston we know our centers. Yao ranks second in Rockets history in career blocked shots (912), sixth in total points (9,196) and sixth in total rebounds (4,467).

My second selection; another easy choice. Tracy McGrady who played for the Rockets from 2004-2010 may have had the most unique entrance and exit this city has ever seen from an NBA player. “T Mac,” arrived to the Toyota center in lavish fashion. Trust me it was impressive, I was there! A few thousand fans showed up, and T Mac was greeted by a highlight reel on the big screen. I can honestly say the city was buzzing, and the Rockets were back on the map. You know how so many of us these days say “the Rockets are a superstar away from being contenders.” Well, Tracy McGrady defined the word superstar. As an individual talent, he was right at the top, and having him in Houston had fans eyes light up like it was Christmas. Throw in the fact that you were pairing him up with a 7’6 giant…. what could go wrong? I remember T Mac saying all the right things in that press conference. Things like “we need this place rockin like it is now, every single night!” He used words like “promise,” and “end my career here in Houston.” Things that all fans wanted to hear at the time…. boy did that change fast. Like Yao Ming, McGrady became an injury liability, and though he handled things questionably at the end of his tenure, the fact still remains that he had a fantastic career as a Rocket. T Mac averaged a stellar 30.7ppg, 6.7apg, and 7.4rpg during the 2005 NBA Playoffs. McGrady became the first player in Rockets history to reach 2,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists in a season, joining Olajuwon, Malone and Hayes with the only 2,000-point seasons in franchise history. If those three names don’t open your eyes, I don’t know what will. McGrady finished his Rockets career 5th in apg (5.6), 12th in total points (6,888) and 11th in total assists (1,699). I think despite the postseason failures that McGrady is always scrutinized for, he deserves a spot on this all decade team.

My third selection comes via a time where the Rockets hit the abyss. We all remember Clutch City, and then the attempt to continue success after that, but when Steve Francis hit the scene, things weren’t pretty. The Rockets were bad, and Francis was stuck in Vancouver, where he had no interest in playing. It  became a love relationship for both, as Steve landed on the scene, and brought relevance back to a team that was struggling. It took three teams and 11 players for Francis to wear a Rockets jersey, but it was well worth the complication. Francis quickly earned the moniker “Franchise” and dazzled fans with his incredible crossover, and athleticism. Though the Rockets were still struggling, Francis shared Rookie of the Year honors with Elton Brand. Francis gained even more popularity in 2000, as he participated in an epic Slam Dunk Contest, in which he put on a show. Vince Carter was obviously the winner, dunking with perfection, but Steve Francis was not far behind. Unfortunately the trend of injuries on this all decade list does not stop with Francis. Steve battled various migraine issues, and then in 2003, battled Jeff Van Gundy. Francis clearly didn’t fit Van Gundy’s style of coaching. The Rockets parted ways with him and good friend Cuttino Mobely. Francis, ranks seventh in career scoring average, second in career assists average, third in career steals average, fourth in triple-doubles (6), fifth in 3-pointers made (466) and fifth in steals (610) in Rockets franchise history. At a time when the Rockets needed a boost, Francis delivered memorable ones.

My fourth selection defines professionalism. Shane Battier, a two time all-defensive second team member, was the defensive stopper for the Rockets for so many years. Battier defined the word “leadership,” and always will for the Rockets. A real glue guy, Battier did what was necessary to keep the Rockets in games. It may have not been the most appealing thing to do, but as they say “someone’s gotta do it.” Battier took the challenge upon himself to guard the opponents best scorer on the court. A challenge that Battier broke down to a science. He always seemed like the most prepared Rocket on the court, and silly mistakes was never an option. At one point Battier even told former Rockets head coach Rick Adelman to only put him in the game when needed. In this particular instance it was against Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs. This prompted Adelman to take Battier out of the starting lineup, and only use him when Ginobili stepped on the court. That’s the kind of dedication Shane Battier possessed. I think if Shane came back to Houston as an all decade team member, he would be proud to know the future looks a bit like the past. The Rockets have themselves a good one right now, and he goes by the name of Chandler Parsons. I am willing to bet Battier has heard about him.

The final selection on this nostalgic journey, is none other than the “Chuck Wagon.” Chuck Hayes who has the most unique story out of anyone on this list, has a lot to be thankful for. The Rockets took a chance on an undrafted player, then gradually increased his minutes, and then started  him at center. Oh did I mention he’s 6’6! I just had to have Chuck on my all decade team. I’ll admit it was tough between him and Luis Scola, but I am such a huge fan of Chuck Hayes’ story, and his time with the Houston Rockets. It was January 18, 2006 when the Rockets signed Hayes to a 10 day contract. Why you ask? Well take a wild guess… injuries. He quickly made an impact, and even had Rockets broadcaster Bill Worrell question whether he was related to Elvin Hayes! Chuck was a rebounding machine, and though he had lots of odds working against him, he had quite the basketball IQ. He had those intangibles on defense that you just couldn’t teach. His offensive game was atrocious, and his free throw shooting demanded a warning sign for players boxing out, but as Hayes proved, with work anything could be fixed. Hayes become a motivational force for the Rockets, and who could forget those huge charges he would take right in the heart of the paint. Who could forget Hayes dominating hall of fame players like Kevin Garnett, and Carmelo Anthony on defense. The greatest part about Chuck Hayes was his fearless attitude. He looked at superstars in the eye and sent them a message on defense. He’s a great player who I wish nothing but success for in Sacramento. Hopefully he will be back in Houston before it’s all said and done.

So that’s how my list pans out. I hope you enjoyed the path through the decade, and don’t forget to vote for your All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

You read right Dumb and Dumber fans, Lloyd Christmas, and Harry Dunne are back!

It was confirmed earlier today, that Dumb and Dumber 2 will begin production this September. After an 18 year hiatus, it seems that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels have the comedy urge once again. According to ComingSoon.net Carrey was in lengthy discussion with Bobby and Peter Farrelly on a potential sequel.

“We’re getting set to shoot ‘Dumb and Dumber 2′ in September,” he says. “It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.”

The news came at the press junket for the Farrelly brothers newest flick The Three Stooges. The comedy at one point boasted an incredible rumored cast which would have seen Jim Carrey, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro play the funny trio. Instead Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, and Chris Diamantopoulos will star the much watered down Three Stooges remake.

1994 was a big year for Carrey who sparked his comedic career in a mainstream way. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, then The Mask, and then Dumb and Dumber catapulted Carrey’s career, and he hasn’t looked back since. In fact, Carrey was offered $700,000 to do Dumb and Dumber, but Ace Ventura: Pet Detective opened at number one at the box office and that upped his salary to a staggering $7 million, almost half the budget of the movie!

Jeff Daniels who has done a plethora of different genres in film, is one of the more versatile actors in Hollywood. Dumb and Dumber certainly put Daniels on the map to a young demographic, and 18 years later he’s willing to give it another shot.

Dumb and Dumber cost a modest 17 million dollars to make in 1994, but had a worldwide gross of $247,275,374. The film has gained a “cult classic” label over the years, and is one of the most quotable comedies ever made. It’s a personal favorite of mine, and it’s one of those movies you can watch over and over again. Thanks to TBS that has been the case for many viewers, as the channel has aired the movie numerous times.

The film has quite the history, and according to IMDB some of them may surprise you. For example, did you know Martin Short and Steve Martin both turned down the role of Lloyd? The original cast to play Harry and Lloyd were Gary Oldman, and Nicolas Cage…. could you even imagine that?

Well it’s great news for comedy fans that Dumb and Dumber 2 has become a reality, and while comedy has taken a different twist in the modern era, hopefully Dumb and Dumber 2 will bring back the nostalgia of Harry and Lloyd’s incredibly hilarious adventure.

Lloyd: Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?

The Rockets had a fantastic win tonight over the Lakers 107-104. The Rockets are making a strong push for the playoffs, and continue to prove that playing at home means winning basketball games. The Rockets are now 17-6 at home, and if you haven’t seen them play live, you really need to get out and support this team.

The win was fantastic, and it’s always fun beating the Lakers, but what I really wanted to write about is the superstar effect. I was lucky enough to attend this game live and in the flesh. It was incredibly entertaining, and my favorite team came out the winners. But the striking focal point on tonight’s game for me was the Kobe Bryant effect.

I have been to numerous Rockets games in my lifetime, and I have even been to playoff games. When you attend a playoff game, the vibe is different. It feels like home court advantage for the most part. The fans are hyped, and free red shirts are given away, giving real meaning to “Red Nation.” Even if the opponent does have a bona fide superstar, you don’t tend to feel it in a big way. Pride and excitement takes over the arena.

The circumstances tonight were vastly different. Because of the shortened season the Lakers only come to Houston ONCE. Let me tell you fans are very aware of this, and the first thing that caught my eye today, were all the Lakers jerseys in the crowd. Wait…. scratch that, all the Kobe Bryant jerseys to be more specific. One human being, at the age of 33 still captivates the basketball loving country. I knew Kobe was loved, but seeing it in person is completely different than hearing about it, or seeing it on television.

I started referring to them as “Kobe’s disciples.” It’s like they were lost in another world. Every time he touched the ball, the disciples would go crazy. He would make a simple jump shot, and arms would go flying in the air.

I have never seen a regular season game like I saw today. Early on it felt like a road game, and I made sure I was in the right venue. I even saw an elderly lady sitting three rows ahead of me who thought Kobe was her “son.” She said she spent some of her savings to get as close to the man as she possibly could. One guy, causing this much ruckus wherever he goes.

Don’t get me wrong, I may sound naive right now but the superstar effect in person is unreal. The first thing that ran through my mind was, wow…. I underrate Kobe’s career, and all the pressure that comes with it. Then I came back to reality, and started hating him again. Hey I was at a Rockets game….

It was just a surreal moment, to see how one player can change the schematics for one franchise. Sure the Lakers are historic, and they have national attention with all the stars that go and support them in LaLa land… but in Houston? At one point fans wanted Kobe back on the court so bad, chants of “Kobe, Kobe, Kobe” broke out at the Toyota Center. Keep in mind the Lakers were holding a double digit lead at the time.

The Rockets and Lakers always do battle in epic style. The Rockets have never stacked up to the talent level the Lakers have, but they play at such a high team level, that they always give the fans something to smile about. As Rockets fans, could you guys imagine how loud the Toyota Center would be on a nightly basis, if the Rockets acquired a superstar? No offense to the guys on this roster. They all work hard, play with respect, and give it all they got. But as fans that want a championship, we know this roster will most likely not get it done. You can never count out a Cinderella story, but far too many times this season we have seen the Rockets lose games down the stretch, due to the opponent having a closer.

Chris Paul has done it twice already, and whether you love him or hate him…. he’s a superstar. The impact of a superstar is undeniable, and now having two is no big deal.

The days of Clutch City were amazing, and it all revolved around a superstar. That superstar needed solid teammates, but when you needed a game defining play, Hakeem Olajuwon was the man.

Kobe Bryant shows no end in sight, and fans still gush over this guy, and his talents. It was truly an interesting vibe in Toyota Center tonight, and while I give major props to Rockets fans, Kobe nation was alive and well.

The NBA trade deadline is now in the books, and while last minute deals did emerge, the days leading up to the deadline was a slow and boring process. Every year it seems like one player holds the key to the domino effect, and this year was no different.

Dwight Howard went back and forth, as the Orlando Magic scrambled to figure out what the end-game to the madness would be. As one tweet put it: @Lakerholicz “Dwight Howard has confirmed he can’t deny or confirm that he didn’t confirm a report that denied he confirmed he was denying confirmation.”

Ya it really was that crazy. Finally around 11:30AM central time, Chris Broussard tweeted “Dwight Howard just texted me that he has signed the waiver of his Early Termination Option.” So Dwight at least guaranteed the Magic one more year, and somewhere in New Jersey, Deron Williams and Mikhail Prokhorov began to weep.

Finally the Dwight saga had come to a close, and other teams could start wheeling and dealing. Obviously the one team I had my eye on was the Houston Rockets. Would Darly Morey finally make a big splash? Would he move the dazed and confused Kevin Martin? Would Pau Gasol finally be a Houston Rocket?

No splash, Kevin Martin is still here, and Pau Gasol continues to aide Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles.

Instead the Rockets acquired Marcus Camby, and Derek Fisher in two separate deals. It doesn’t sound like much does it? Let it sink in first…..alright now let’s break it down.

It didn’t take much to acquire Marcus Camby. The Rockets shipped sparsely used guard Jonny Flynn, center Hasheem Thabeet, and the second-round pick acquired from Minnesota. Camby who brings much needed length to the Houston Rockets front-court, will form a nice duo with Samuel Dalembert. The acquisition of Camby will also ease the pressure on forward Luis Scola, who can now focus on scoring during this stretch run into the playoffs. At the age of 37 Camby is a veteran defensive presence, and spends his time in the Houston area during off-seasons. The Rockets essentially traded a second round pick for the veteran center, who has an expiring contract at the end of the year. Low risk, low commitment, veteran presence.

The Rockets were not done after acquiring Camby. As all of us sat and waited for the “big one,” the most unexpected acquisition of all was made. The Rockets had traded backup Jordan Hill, for another 37 year old point guard that you may be familiar with. Anyone remember that guy who threw a mean elbow at Scola during the playoffs? Yes Red Nation, the enemy we all know as Derek Fisher, is now an allie. The crust of this trade is not the acquisition of Fisher, but rather the 2012 first round pick owned by Dallas that the Rockets received. Another safe but effective move to acquire a draft pick, with no interest in long term services from the player. It is also rumored that the Rockets will buy-out Fishers contract as soon as starting guard Kyle Lowry returns from his bacterial infection woes. At 37 Fisher serves no purpose for the Rockets.

So what does this all mean? The Rockets have sent a clear message, they want that 8th seed in the Western Conference. If the playoffs were to start today, the Rockets would be facing the number one seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. Sounds scary right? Believe it or not the Rockets have dodged the Thunder two times already, winning both games. The Thunder can’t stand the Rockets, and by adding Marcus Camby into the fold, the Rockets keep the core base that has brought them success intact, while adding more size in the front-court. With Kendrick Perkins, and Serge Ibaka manning the paint, the Rockets have more leverage than before.

The premise here is that the Rockets do lock up the 8th seed, and throw everything they have at the Thunder. With this current roster, that’s really all you can ask for.

The trade-deadline simply became a risk free zone for the Rockets. They swung deals that combined the future, and the present. The Rockets are so deep into this Western Conference race, that only a large blockbuster trade would have been worth compromising the battle. Clearly that blockbuster deal did not pan out, and the Rockets are going with what they got. It’s a talented group, and while many would love to see the team start fresh, that direction has never seemed to be an option for this franchise.

So we roll with what we got Red Nation. We support the roster as it stands, and hope Kevin Martin has an epiphany. We get healthy for a battle with the Thunder in the playoffs.

It wasn’t the big deadline that we hoped for, but the Rockets made small improvements without breaking the structure, or the bank.

LeBron James has had a spectacular year thus far for the Miami Heat, and while many acknowledge how impressive James has been, you still have those stragglers holding onto the past.

Over the last few days the LeBron chatter has picked back up. Not because LeBron continues to defy logic with his overall game, but because LeBron has passed up on a couple game winners that he could have taken. The first one being rather insignificant because it was in an exhibition (All Star Game) and the other in a regular season game against the Utah Jazz.

“I just had to make one more dang play out there,” before then adding, “A stop, rebound, a shot, assist, a block, whatever it took. I fell short again!”

The thing about LeBron not shooting that final shot is perplexing. For those that don’t watch the game, but instead see ESPN beat the subject of “LeChoke” to death, forget to look at the stat sheet. Without the monster night that LeBron had in the All Star Game, the EAST would be toast, and we would all be sitting here complaining about how boring the All Star weekend has gotten. That seems to be the trend with LeBron, it’s never a bad night, it’s a bad final decision. Oh did I use the word “decision,” oops.

LeBron James is averaging impressive numbers across the board. In the 35 games played James is averaging 27.9 points, 1.8 steals, 6.8 assists, 8.2 rebounds, all while shooting 55% from the court. It is completely appropriate to say that James is the best overall NBA player in the game.

As the old adage goes “defense wins championships,” and LeBron James has a lot of that. We have seen him put on a high flying show, yet people have not forgotten about “The Decision,” and all the other chatter that comes along with James.

Stats aren’t the only thing that defines a player, I agree with that argument. When I look at LeBron James the human being, I don’t see any catastrophic flaws. For a guy who jumped into the fray straight out of high school, with unprecedented hype, I think LeBron James has done an impressive job being a role model off the court. No drug charges, no involvement in a significant crime, no gun charges…. I mean is this guy human! Ya it’s rare these days to find a huge superstar not have a significant blemish in his life outside the sport. LeBron’s ego and cockiness, have gotten him a bad wrap. Hate to break it to you haters, but that’s not an offend-able crime.

Was “The Decision,” a terrible idea? Was his decision a bad one? No…. and no. Was the execution by ESPN and LeBron’s entourage silly, yes absolutely. But tell me when ESPN hasn’t embellished a big story for ratings? Anyone heard of Linsanity? Uhh, just stop ESPN, stop ruining a good thing with your never ending cycle, and your congested ticker screaming Lin-sane phrases.

LeBron James’ intentions are good. The Decision was not just about ego, it did significantly help out the Boys and Girls club, and LeBron continues to work with charitable organizations. Things could have been handled much better, and LeBron could have respectfully informed his old team that he wasn’t coming back. Instead he threw them under the bus, and Dan Gilbert fell off the deep end with Comic Sans as his choice of dosage.

Until LeBron James wins a championship, the haters won’t go anywhere. Even if LeBron does win a championship people will bring up the point that “he needed help to do it,” as if that deserves an * next to it. Asking for help is just fine in my book. Great players in the NBA today are doing it all the time, will you shun them as well or is this just a LeBron grudge you’re holding?

My thing on the final shot situation is simple. I would much rather see LeBron take that final shot and miss, than seeing him pass it to someone else. Last night against Utah he asked Haslem to do something he has no interest in doing. Instead of putting Haslem in a game winning situation, why not end the great night you started? If LeBron took that game winning shot in the All Star Game and missed, the hate would still exist but at least he tried! Even Kobe’s reaction at the end was like “wtf are you doing Bron, after the performance you have put up you need to take that shot and enjoy the glory,” and Kobe can say that because he knows exactly what it feels like.

Kobe Bryant is not 100% in game winners, but he’s not afraid to try. LeBron James needs to take this league into his hands and give the haters nothing to hate about.

All I can say is, if you are a die hard NBA fan, then not appreciating what LeBron James is doing this year makes you a grudge holder. Instead of worrying about what he says, why not try to find something real to criticize about? Flaws exist, I am not drinking the Kool-Aid here, but give me more than just the “he’s a jerk, and I can’t stand him,” bit.

“NO RINGS,” isn’t enough for me. Sorry. LeBron needs to win a championship…. I take that back he needs to win multiple championships because he’s that good. Until he does, a lot of this doesn’t stop, but until then I have no problem acknowledging how entertaining it is to watch a human being with that kind of athleticism dominate the game of basketball.
